Microhabitat associations are considered to be important for juvenile survivorship and growth of coral reef fishes. The aim of the study was to quantify microhabitat associations between juvenile and adult white-streaked grouper Epinephelus ongus, which supports important fisheries in coral reef areas. Underwater observations revealed that most juveniles were found in bottlebrush Acropora spp., staghorn Acropora spp. and coral rubble and there was a significant positive use of bottlebrush Acropora spp. and a significant negative use of coral rubble. For adults, most individuals were found in bottlebrush Acropora spp. and staghorn Acropora spp., and there was a significant positive use of staghorn Acropora spp. and significant negative use of coral rubble. A habitat choice experiment by using pre-settlement individuals revealed that both bottlebrush Acropora spp. and staghorn Acropora spp. were used as settlement sites, whereas coral rubble was rarely used as a settlement site. Results of the study suggest that juvenile and adult E. ongus showed significantly positive microhabitat associations with bottlebrush Acropora spp. and staghorn Acropora spp., respectively, in the field. Bottlebrush Acropora spp. has smaller inter-branch spaces than staghorn Acropora spp., which could drive patterns of microhabitat associations. In addition, post-settlement processes such as predation may influence the spatial distribution of juveniles. Because Acropora corals are very susceptible to coral bleaching, we predict that rising temperatures from climate change will negatively impact populations of E. ongus.  相似文献

The fiber length and packing density of the PTFE membrane element were increased. The MBR was stably operated under an SADm of 0.13 m3·m-2·hr-1. Specific energy consumption was estimated to be less than 0.4 kWh·m-3. In this study, we modified a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) hollow-fiber membrane element used for submerged membrane bioreactors (MBRs) to reduce the energy consumption during MBR processes. The high mechanical strength of the PTFE membrane made it possible to increase the effective length of the membrane fiber from 2 to 3 m. In addition, the packing density was increased by 20% by optimizing the membrane element configuration. These modifications improve the efficiency of membrane cleaning associated with aeration. The target of specific energy consumption was less than 0.4 kWh·m-3 in this study. The continuous operation of a pilot MBR treating real municipal wastewater revealed that the MBR utilizing the modified membrane element can be stably operated under a specific air demand per membrane surface area (SADm) of 0.13 m3·m-2·hr-1 when the daily-averaged membrane fluxes for the constant flow rate and flow rate fluctuating modes of operation were set to 0.6 and 0.5 m3·m-2·d-1, respectively. The specific energy consumption under these operating conditions was estimated to be less than 0.37 kWh·m-3. These results strongly suggest that operating an MBR equipped with the modified membrane element with a specific energy consumption of less than 0.4 kWh·m-3 is highly possible.  相似文献

采用真空式土壤溶液采样器收集了宜昌、巫山松树林中天然土壤溶液,采用高效液相色谱法Al-Lumogallion柱后荧光检测,分析测试了土壤溶液中可溶性铝的形态,研究了由于土壤酸化引起天然土壤溶液中不同形态铝的迁移转化结果表明,天然土壤溶液中含有不同形态的铝,主要是有机铝、 AISO4+、AIF2+、Al(OH)2+、Al3+等.宜昌、巫山地区土壤溶液中活性铝(Al3+、AlOH2+F)的含量比较低.土壤的酸化使得天然土壤溶液中总铝含量增加、铝形态的优势态发生变化,即土壤的酸化使得天然土壤溶液中活性铝-Al3+、AlOHF2+含量和比例增加.土壤酸化还降低了大然土壤溶液中的BC/Al比值,这些变化的结果都增加了对森林潜在的危害.  相似文献

In the routine São Paulo state (Brazil) surface water quality-monitoring program, which includes the Salmonella microsome mutagenicity assay as one of its parameters, a river where water is taken and treated for drinking water purposes has repeatedly shown mutagenic activity. A textile dyeing facility employing azo-type dyes was the only identifiable source of mutagenic compounds. We extracted the river and drinking water samples with XAD4 at neutral and acidic pH and with blue rayon, which selectively adsorbs polycyclic compounds. We tested the industrial effluent, raw, and treated water and sediment samples with YG1041 and YG1042 and compared the results with the TA98 and TA100 strains. The elevated mutagenicity detected with YG-strains suggested that nitroaromatics and/or aromatic amines were causing the mutagenicity detected in the samples analyzed. Positive responses for the blue rayon extracts indicated that mutagenic polycyclic compounds were present in the water samples analyzed. The mutagen or mixture of mutagens present in the effluent and water samples cause mainly frameshift mutations and are positive with and without metabolic activation. The Salmonella assay combined with different extraction procedures proved to be very useful in the identification of the origin of the pollution and in the identification of the classes of chemical compounds causing the mutagenic activity in the river analyzed.  相似文献

To quantify the effects of temperature on the diffusivity of deuterated water (HDO) in compacted sodium bentonite, through-diffusion experiments were conducted at elevated temperatures ranging from 298 to 333 K. Kunipia F (Na-montmorillonite content>98 wt.%; Kunimine Industries) was compacted to a dry density of 0.9 or 1.35 Mg/m(3). As montmorillonite particles were oriented perpendicular to the direction of compaction, the anisotropy of diffusivity was investigated both parallel and normal to the preferred orientation of the montmorillonite. The effective diffusion coefficient D(e) of HDO was larger when the diffusional direction was parallel as opposed to normal to the preferred orientation for both dry densities. The magnitude of D(e) and the anisotropy for HDO were in good accordance with previously reported results for tritiated water at room temperature. Activation energies of D(e) were isotropic and increased with increasing dry density over the range of 19-25 kJ/mol. This relationship was considered to be due to both pore structure development and the high activation energy of water near the montmorillonite surface.  相似文献

There are size-related differences in the use of feeding habitats (planktonic or benthic; oceanic or neritic) by adult female loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) within Japanese populations. We thus hypothesized that the differences may be reflected in their remigration and growth patterns, and investigated the relationships between body size and remigration intervals, growth rates, and remigration percentages, for female loggerheads nesting on a Japanese beach between 1991 and 2001. Although remigration intervals, growth rates, and remigration percentages were not significantly different among females, there were trends for longer remigration intervals and lower remigration percentages in smaller females. Utilization of algae for decorating by the intertidal majid crab Tiarinia cornigera was examined by laboratory experiments in relation to availability of algae, presence of a predator, and the presence of conspecific and heterospecific crabs. Different availabilities of decorating materials had a positive correlation on decorating amount by juveniles, while the correlation was not so clear in subadults. The amount of decorating decreased with increasing density of conspecific crabs in the presence of a predator, but there was so clear relationship in the absence of a predator. The decrease in decorating under high density could be due to intraspecific aggression, because the superior crab, in fighting, was found to be decorated with more algae. Tiarinia cornigera was found to be superior to the co-occurring different majid species Micippa platipes in fighting. When T. cornigera and M. platipes were housed together, the former was decorated with more algae than the latter in the presence of a predator, but in the absence of a predator, the amount of algae was not different. Thus, presence of a predator may motivate intraspecific competition in T. cornigera as well as interspecific competition between T. cornigera and M. platipes for decorating materials.  相似文献
